Buying circular saw blades is not always straightforward. You’ll need to choose one based on the job at hand. If you’re carrying out several bits of work on different materials, you may need to get a couple of blades to keep in your arsenal. We’ve put together a quick guide to help you decide which blades to purchase.
Choose A Blade Diameter
Your circular saw blade needs to be the right diameter for the job. If it’s not, you could damage the blade or have difficulty cutting. This could pose a safety risk, so take some extra time to confirm that your blade diameter is correct. The larger the blade, the deeper the cut. The most common diameter is 7 ¼ inches, but some saws aren’t big enough to work with this. Make sure you check the maximum diameter that your saw can have before you make a purchase. Most saws have protective covers that won’t physically allow you to put a blade that’s too large in. However, if yours doesn’t have this, you must take extra care.
Select Your Circular Saw Blade’s Teeth
The amount of teeth that your blade has will dictate the type of cut you get. Lots of teeth will produce a smoother, cleaner cut than a blade with fewer. However, not all materials will be effectively cut with the same blade. If you need to do a lot of cutting and are limited on time, you may wish to use a circular saw blade with fewer teeth, so the cuts can be made quickly.
You can also choose blades with larger or smaller teeth. Larger teeth with space in between are great for cutting pieces of wood that produce a lot of dust. Whereas smaller teeth are good for making cuts against the grain of a piece of wood or material without creating splinters.
Get The Right Gullet Size
This is the space in between the teeth on the circular saw blade. The more space there is between the teeth, the more dust and waste is expelled from the material as the saw spins. This means that woods which will produce lots of sawdust are better off being cut with blades that have a larger gullet.
